Textile Piece

I was set the task of creating my own textile postcard using my urban and rural research - my first idea was to hand stitch an image which i had taken of a street in Manchester but found it would have taken far too long to complete for the deadline. I found Jenny Hart's work quite inspirational towards my own as I liked the way she could stitch quite delicate images by hand:

For my final pieces I used two Images - one of Liverpool and another of Manchester, and used a phototransferring method. Then over the top of each i did some hand-stitching with different bright coloured threads to add more of a home made feel to the postcards. I stitched the address lines and stamp box into the back to make them look a little more authentic.

 

I took these images right at the beginning of the course in Liverpool and Manchester using an EOS 3000 film camera from College. I used up to 9 exposures on each resulting in some interesting images from layering light and dark tones on top of eachother continuously. The images above are in my sketchbook, with these particular ones I moved the camera only slightly on an angle or to one side to produce a broken, disjointed look.
Later on, I produced some Images similar to these but instead of using film I took the photographs with my DSLR and then layered them over the top of each other numerous times using photoshop to get the same broken feel but with alot more layers.

 

 

 

For this part of the project I researched Photographers such as Idris Khan and Harry Callahan.

A3 Acrylic painting of a chained fence which was around the docks in Liverpool. The quality isn't too good, i blame the scanner in college. The bottom image is one of the photographs which i used for reference when painting the chains.

Leading on from the Maquette making, I did the same kind of thing with clay - cutting the shapes similar to those on my urban photographic research and skyline drawings. Also adding different textures to each side using different craft and cutting tools. After being fired in the kiln they were covered in gloss to avoid any chipping etc.

The shapes used for the maquettes were from some urban research I did over the holiday - I used the skylines and outlines that were in the images I had taken and when each individual paper piece was taped together it formed a strange new shape. The lighting used brought out dramatic shadowing which I later sketched in my book:

FDTN PARTAYYY!

aaaaaaaaaa! We had our foundation Christmas party yesterday and it was pretty epic! Sean dressed as Santa and gave us our secret Santa presents, we played pass the parcel, musical statues and the iceberg game.
I won reindeer antlers from pass the parcel! It's got me all excited for Christmas but I'm going to miss the foundation lot until we're all back in January.
